During the October 16th 2009 weekend, the Oakridge Aeros Major Novice team traveled to the Owen Sound Tournament. Our first game was against a tough Orillia squad. We were down a goal with 13 seconds of the first. We tied it up by the end of the first and we’re down again by a score of 3-1 going into the third. The Third was a hard fought battle but the Aeros came back with 3 goals in the third period. Aeros win 4-3.
Off to the second game against the host team, Owen Sound. We started early and didn’t look back. Great team passing allowed many players to get on the score sheet with their first or second of the year. A combined shutout for the Aeros goalies.
Our next game was against Waterloo, who last year beat us in the final of our own tournament. We got off to a great start in the first and took a quick 2-0 lead and looked to be an easy victory. In the second things changed and we had some penalty trouble; Waterloo tied it up 2-2. Our 3rd goal in the last period was the winner. Aeros win 3-2.
Sunday morning saw us play Duffield for the
semi-final. A very close game in the first two periods but we blew it open in the third to get the win and move onto finals against Waterloo again.
We got off to a slow start in the championship game going down early 1-0. We tied it up before the end of the period. During the second we still didn’t have it going and we were down 3-1 going into the third. At the start of the third the guys took over and clawed our way back to a 3-3 tie and send it to overtime. With two minutes remaining in OT, we scored our fourth goal to win it in dramatic fashion. A great weekend was had by all.
Congratulations to all the Oakridge Aeros Major Novice players and coaches!
