| Welcome | |||||||||||||||||||
| The Oakridge Tyke Program is a non-competitive program for 4, 5 and 6 year olds designed to introduce them to the great game of hockey in a fun way. No scores, no standings or records are kept. We use an Oakridge-tailored program based upon the Hockey Canada “Initiation Program” model, a proven methodology that has been used to introduce hundreds of thousands of young players to the great game of hockey. This program allows every Tyke-level player to be truly part of the game. | |||||||||||||||||||
| This ongoing program is designed around 3 main objectives: | |||||||||||||||||||
| - Introduce players to the fundamentals of the game in a fun and supportive environment. | |||||||||||||||||||
| - Allow the players to build their confidence (“I can get the puck too!”). | |||||||||||||||||||
| - Progress the players through drills and games that match their skill level to prepare them for their next level of hockey. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Tyke players attend an assessment at the end of September. They are then allocated to Red and White teams based on their skills, rather than age, so that kids on each team are playing with similarly skilled teammates regardless of age. Every child receives their shirt and socks once the teams are firmed up in mid-to-late October (they get to keep the shirt and socks!). | |||||||||||||||||||
| Unlike other programs, our Saturday morning Tyke hockey games use a reduced area but longer in time to promote more chances to touch the puck, stopping, turning, accelerating, passing and shooting. As their skating skills develop the kids will progress through our program from 4-on-4 1/3 ice games => 4-on-4 ½ ice games => 5-on-5 full-ice games. In doing so they will be better prepared to enter Novice hockey where penalties, face-offs, off-sides and referees are introduced to the game. | |||||||||||||||||||
| During October we will use the regular weekday practices and Sat. game times for practices to get the kids up to speed. Games will be scheduled beginning in November. | |||||||||||||||||||

| Dressing Your Player | |||||||||||||||||||
| For Sat. games at Oakridge: As we can have 4 teams playing at the same time and dressing rooms in Oakridge are on the small side, we recommend dressing your player at home and putting on the skates when you arrive early at the arena. | |||||||||||||||||||
| To keep your player warm and dry, often kids will wear pajamas under their equipment to absorb the sweat. As well, they can wear glove inserts (thin gloves sometimes sold as “Majic Gloves”, etc. at Canadian tire and other stores for $1-$2) inside their hockey gloves. This goes a long way to keeping warm in the cold arenas. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Coach and Your Practice Time | |||||||||||||||||||
| Your team will always practice in the same timeslot. There is a Red and a White team practicing in each timeslot. The teams will jointly do a full-ice warm-up / power-skating drills, and then will break into their own teams to use ½ ice each. | |||||||||||||||||||

| We will hand out the jerseys at the end of October along with the player’s socks once the teams have their final balancing (no charge). We also get the last name bars put on across the bottom (typically an extra $10 fee / child). Players get to keep their jerseys and socks. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Knights Games | |||||||||||||||||||
| We will conitnue our tradition that each Oakridge TYKE team will participate in one London Knights 1st period intermission mini-game during the 2009/2010 season. Full equipment must be worn. Coaches must wear helmets, buckled-up, as well. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Each team must sell its block of 75 tickets at $14/ticket. Everyone requires a ticket (including your player). Your coach will provide you full details about the night. | |||||||||||||||||||
| You will arrive at least 30 minutes before the game at Gate 4 to deposit your equipment. Players will wear their Oakridge jerseys. You will watch the 1st period from your seats and go down to the dressing room when the clock reads “12:00” to go in the period. Note: Only 1 parent / child in the dressing room. Equipment can be picked up after the game. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Please remember to follow all the instructions of the JLC arena staff when dressing and watching your player. | |||||||||||||||||||
